I was extremely impressed with the beautifully designed graphics and the well written, but easy to read, book based on the secret journals of John Jewitt. I would highly recommend this book be purchased by middle schools for inclusion in their American and World History curriculum. Tobe able to experience and comprehend a remarkable ordeal by a young English boy in the year 1802 through pictures is so much morebeneficial than looking at words and using ones imagination. Perhaps at 78 I'm better at comprehending events through the use of pictures rather than just printed matter.

This is honestly one of the best non-fiction/historical graphic novels you're ever going to read. That's as concise as I can put it. It's fascinating, riveting, beautiful to look at, and entirely unforgettable. It could be triple the length and you'd never lose interest. Perfectly executed.

I bought this and my Eighth Grader devoured it in one afternoon. Fascinating story, told with great attention to detail. Would recommend.

This book blew me away, and I'm not a fan of graphic novels (until now). I was drawn to the fact that it was based on a true story, about a young Englishman who was taken captive (and most of his fellow sailors slain) by an Indian tribe in the early 1800s. He remained their prisoner, learning a bit of their language and customs, for three years. The compelling way in which the story was told caused me to think: "How would I have behaved under those circumstances?" and also, "How different are these two cultures in terms of what they ask of, and offer, their young men?" The strong art accompanies and reinforces the majesty of the landscapes; the loneliness of the captive; and the drama of the story. It kept me captive for the two days in which I read it--and I'm a grown-up (who likes novels and English history). The language is very faithful to the writing of the time--it draws you into the story, and keeps you back in that era. The beginning is a bit violent (the massacre of the crew), which makes it more appropriate for middle schoolers rather than elementary school students, but the story is one to which anyone could relate. It's a good gift for any reader who loves adventure stories, or to an artist struggling to capture the passage of time and beauty and savagery of landscapes. Thanks to this book, I will explore more graphic novels (I knew only Persepholis) with a more open mind. I'm also going to give it as a gift to fellow readers who love books, but who don't think that graphic novels have anything to offer mature readers. On the contrary--this book changed my literary world.

I bought this as a gift for my friend's kids...aged 8 and 10. THEY ACTUALLY STOPPED PLAYING WITH THEIR LEGOS TO READ IT! I can't think of a more resounding endorsement than that. A great gift for kids, but also an incredible and intriguing story for teens and grown ups.

The storytelling in this book is very engaging. The language, the pacing, the transitions are all well done. The story, coupled with the captivating visuals, propelled me into an adventure that I didn't want to end. I gave it as a birthday gift for someone turning thirteen. Now he's enjoying it just as much!

The Qur’an and its Biblical Reflexes soundly refutes this idea.Durie demonstrates, through an innovative and thorough linguistic and theological analysis of the Qur’an, that the Quranic understanding of God, of prophethood, of justice, of covenant, of sin, of the fall of Adam, and so on, owe nothing at all to the biblical tradition preserved in Judaism and Christianity. On all these topics, and more, the Qur’an has creatively come up with a new and unique set of ideas that bear no relationship to those of the Biblical world and its teachings. We can only speak accurately of two Abrahamic religions, and of Islam, which unsuccessfully claims to be inherited from their thought world and values. There are only two Abrahamic religions, not three.Durie’s study take the innovative step of analyzing the progression of ideas in the Qur’an without any reference to the Muslim biography of Muhammad (the Sira) that provide the contexts for understanding of the Qur’an in light of the timeline of Muhammad’s life as a messenger, from 610-632 C.E. In my own teaching of the Qur’an I have understood the development in the thinking of the Qur’an’s messenger by reading the surahs of the Qur’an in the context of the Messenger’s life and career. Such a reading is standard practice in Quranic studies, by both Muslims and non-Muslims.Given what Durie believes to be compelling evidence that the historical value of the biography of Muhammad must be seriously questioned, he proceeds to layout a developmental sequence in the surahs based purely on his analysis of the actual texts of the Qur’an and what they reference and the telling phrases and words that appear at various places in the development of the Messenger’s thinking within the Qur’an. Nevertheless, it appears to me that the timeline that Durie arrives at through linguistic analysis of the Arabic text, for the developmental sequence of the surahs, correlates quite closely with the timeline that the Sira suggests.A few final observations and comments:1. Even though Durie analyzes the Arabic text of the Qur’an throughout, his use of transliteration makes his entire analysis accessible to non-Arabic speakers. This means that non-Arabic fluent readers can follow and wrestle with his argument without any difficulty. In fact, given the complexity of the material that Durie is handling, this book is remarkably readable!2. It is my hope that all Christians who are working among Muslims will take the time to read this analysis. While I expect that few will agree with every single point of his analysis, we must all honestly grapple with the rigor of Durie’s analysis and the compelling nature of his conclusions.3. It is my hope that Muslim Quranic scholars and educated English-speaking Muslims will read this book. With gentle, careful and penetrating analysis, Durie challenges many “sacred” beliefs about where the Qur’an originates from. May this book soon be translated into Arabic!4. This work is truly ground breaking. I hope that this book will lead to a plethora of future studies of the Qur’an, and of its relationship to the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, that will illuminate and expose much that has passed for accepted truth in both Quranic studies and in Islamic studies more generally.5. From now on, anyone researching the meaning and origins of the Qur’an will have to deal with Durie’s ground-breaking analysis.

The Mongol's meteoric conquest of Asia and China brought their vast armies into contact with the peripheral European states. Europe had not faced an external threat of this proportion for hundreds of years: the Magyar's had been mostly pacified, the Vikings had stopped their wholesale raids, and the Muslim states' great expansion had slowed due too the presence of Crusader armies in the Middle East. News of the Mongol threat had reached the various leaders of the West - the Queen of Georgia the Prince of Galicia had all sent desperate appeals for aid. Fortunately for Europe, the death of Khan Ogedey in 1241 and the discord between the Mongol leaders in the West caused their armies to withdraw from Western Europe's borders.The first primary source in this volume is John of Plano Carpini's 'History of the Mongols.' John was a 65 year old massively fat Franciscan monk without ANY knowledge of oriental languages. His mission was to spy on the Mongols to see if they were as threatening and powerful as reported and to provide suggestions as to ways to defend against them. His mission was supported by Pope Innocent IV and he set out on the 5,000 miles journey in 1245. John of Plano Carpini met with the Great Khan Guyuk and this text outlines the characters and customs of the Mongols, the food they ate, the roles of men and women, descriptions of their armies, their history, religion, government, clothes, housing, and even accurate accounts of the genealogy of the royal family. The most fascinating part of his account is his description of how to wage war against them. If Christendom wishes to save itself, the army "should be organized in the same way as the Tartar army," it ought to "have scouts in every direction," and "the Christians should also beware of their usual tendency of over-expenditure, lest they be obliged to go home on account of lack of money and the Tartars destroy the whole earth." This Chronicle is easy to read and is the first real contact with the Mongols by the West. It is interspersed with hilarious statements of Western disgust with Mongol customs, "they do not wash their dishes," "they do not wash their clothes," and if a "virgin commits fornication with anyone, they kill BOTH the man and the woman."The second group of documents are Two Bulls of Pope Innocent IV Addressed to the Emperor of the Tartars. These explain the tenants of the Christian faith and beg the Mongols to be peaceful and to do not harm to the envoys.The third document is The Narrative of Benedict the Pole. This is a brief relation by John of Plano Carpini's Polish companion dictated by him to a prelate of Cologne upon his return from Asia. It paraphrases the two bulls and provides little to John of Plano Carpini's much longer and more detailed account.The fourth document is Guyuk Khan's Letter to Pope Innocent IV (1246). The Khan states that he does not understand the Pope's request for him to be peaceful since he has the Mongol God's favor which is the reason the Mongols have already conquered most of Asia. He demands that the Pope "say with a sincere ear" the he will submit and serve him.The Journey of William of Rubrick is the second main primary source and is even more interesting than John's due to the fact that William of Rubrick voluntarily set out in the employ of the French king to convert the Mongols to Christianity. His account has the "fullest and most authentic information on the Mongol Empire in its pre-Chinese phase that we posses." Brother William's book is a straightforward account of his journey and his personal experiences in full detail. Brother William describes the endless drinking parties of Karakorum with men of every race and religion, the great disputations between representatives from the major religions, meetings with the Khan, arguments and alliances with Nestorian Christians who were lived all across Asia (even as far as China), difficulties with his constantly drunk interpreter, and revelations he had concerning the geographic errors of St. Isidore's Encyclopedia as he wandered across the vast expanses of the steppes. This is probably one of the most interesting and vivid Medieval accounts that I have ever read!The last document group includes The Letters of John of Monte Corvino, a Letter of Brother Peregrine Bishop of Zaytun, and a Letter of Andrew of Perugia. Although "inferior in literary and historical value" to John of Plano Carpini and William of Rubruck's narratives they are of great importance for the history of Christendom since they record the beginnings of the Catholic missionary activity in China.This collection of primary sources is superbly accompanied by Christopher Dawson's introduction. He outlines all necessary background information, the rise of the Mongols, the response of Christendom, the eventual alliances between the Mongols and the West against the Muslims in the Holy Land, different Christian sects (Nestorians etc), and analysis of the accounts and their authors. The only thing missing from this volume is a map. However, this does not at all destract from this astoundingly thorough and enlightening volume of a neglected area of Medieval history. A MUST BUY for the Medieval Historian!

This is an amazing work. That a psychological study of a comic character could prove to be so compelling in inspiring one to search ones own internal, emotional, and psychological states. I have long identified with the "hero" and/or "anti-hero", as well as those painted as "villains" when a compelling story or mythology plumbs the depths of their internal motivations, battles, and struggles. Great stories always add that element even within the context of fantasy, and this book explores that with depth and precision. I was consistently surprised (though perhaps I shouldn't have been) as to how exploring these elements led to my looking inward into the substance of my own emotional and psychological workings. That these modern myths can help us explore ourselves is one of the great reasons to immerse ourselves in them. The author has done fine work (and research) here, and I found this to be consistently compelling and insightful reading. Highly recommended.

I got this book as a potential resource for a class I'll be teaching. Personality/social psych isn't my background so I thought the book had some good points and references. I also appreciated that it's recent and covers Wolverine's entire history, at least at a surface level, from Hulk 181 to Old Man Logan. That said, there's more of a focus on early 'loner' Logan and less on recent "is everywhere on every team" Wolverine. Overall, a good read if you're interested in Wolverine and/or the psychology of stress and trauma.

I enjoyed the book and thought the author had some interesting insights into the character of Wolverine. I felt the book could have gone into more depth in a few areas, but overall I would recommend to any Wolverine fan.

If one by now hasn’t at least a conversational knowledge of Marvel Comic’s lead character Wolverine, I’d hesitate to guess under what rock they live. I mean he debuted in 1974 and has experienced nothing short of a vertical popularity growth curve since his “rebirth” in 1982. Comics, graphic novels, movies, apparel, action figures, collectables, tote bags, beverage cups, wallets, Halloween costumes…the full monte, you name it he's on it!BUT….this book is something special and a legitimate “must have” for any Wolverine affectionato!!!With a psychological professionalism worthy of a textbook yet with a surgical precision conveyed in clear comprehensible English, psychologist Suzanna Flores painstakingly details what makes Wolverine what he is, what he isn’t, what makes that flawed anti-hero tick, and why he is found to be so compelling.No doubt about it, this book is a “must read” before your next cocktail party, date, class, Netflix selection or road trip. It’s a fascinating read, and an involving page-turner you’ll be hard pressed to put down.

We liked the first couple of Professor Astrocat books enough to get Human Body Odyssey and Atomic Adventures. We LOVE those. We love them so much, that now I just preorder anything Dominic Walliman writes. My seven-year-old begs for them as bedtime stories, and I now understand the periodic table better than I understood it after a year of high school chemistry.

Excellent product with easy to follow explanations. More information than I though which is really nice. You cant go wrong here folks. Space book is on point as well.

A smaller kid can connect to the images, and a bigger kid connects to the explanation. Educational and gorgeously made. The book is big and well printed. A beautiful gift!

It’s a helpful book. Sometimes you wish some person new to the concepts had forced the the author to fill in some gaps. Chapter 2: Code Organization is good, but “common practice” for code organization is never addressed nor examples given. Now I know that modules are preferred to namespaces, but I’ll need to go searching through collections of open source to try to decide better how to organize my package or application. From that chapter I also know how to create my own NPM package, but not how to install it from a private repository nor exactly how to deal with local repositories. That’s what I really want to know still!The index leaves a lot to be desired. I’m adding a lot of things to it myself. Interfaces are treated well on p. 44, but you won’t find anything in the index for that. Nor will you find that the import statement is indexed. Key info starts on p. 69.Regarding the Kindle version: your best bet may be to use the instructions at the very back of the book to buy the electronic version for $5.00 once you have the hard copy, download as a PDF, upload it from your iOS device (can’t test Android) and choose to convert it on the way in to Kindle format. The table of content is mangled, but the rest of the book looks pretty good.

I work on a large web-based application that makes extensive use of JavaScript. Our JS codebase is getting unwieldy and hard to maintain so we are taking the plunge and starting to migrate it to TypeScript.This book provides an excellent grounding in TypeScript for people familiar with JavaScript. It illustrates the problems TypeScript is meant to solve (and those it isn't). It also provides clear examples of TypeScript conventions and capabilities. It works well both as a learning tool and a reference -- I've been turning to it regularly during my porting project.For my own needs, the book does have a couple of areas that I feel deserve more detail: setting up a TypeScript environment in an IDE (such as IntelliJ); and how to best help TypeScript coexist with a an existing JavaScript codebase that is being migrated. I've needed to turn to Stack Overflow etc. for information in these areas.Overall, though, I highly recommend this book if you want to explore TypeScript or need a TypeScript reference.

This is a superb book. Adjectives that come to mind: clear, thorough, well--written, concise, complete, excellent.I have bought a number of TypeScript books, and this one is the best by very, very far. It may be the best programming language book that I've ever read.Cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Buy it right now if you want to learn TypeScript.

I didn't manage to go through the book or even read two pages from this book, as the format is all bold, all the same size. It's tough to read a book which doesn't utilize whitespaces bold and standard text or even code blocks.The content of the book seems fine (I bought it so already went through my quality check), didn't manage to come to any conclusions though if it's excellent content or just good one. I really want to read this book, but how can I read with so much mental constraint when I have to force my eyes to follow the text.Is this even went through editor checkup before publishing to kindle? At this point, "I want my money back" thoughts are occurring to me. Such bad formatting books should not be making into kindle store at all. Even though I want to read this book asap, and have no wish for anybody to take it down. I question the amazon quality process for allowing poor kindle publishing.I have to know more about this topic, so I guess I have to force myself to read this book in this way, so I'm not going to return it.

I really like this book. The examples are clear and written well. Highly recommend reading this book to get a soild understanding of TypeScript before moving into Angular development.

After 1st page everything in Kindle version is formatted in bold. This bug should be fixed ASAP.

My father ( sorry I have to boast here) worked with Dennis Smith in the belly of the beast while he was writing this wonderful book. He was in 38 truck which supported 82 at many fires in the south Bronx. Smith changed 38 to 48 in his novel. This novel was really the first book to lionize firefighters and give the public a view into the lives they lead. My father has nothing but the highest opinion of Dennis Smith as both a firefighter and as a man.Dennis during the 911 commission hearings again ran head first into a political firestorm by testifying to the criminally negligent leadership of the leadership of the city of New York on that fateful day that contributed to the loss of 343 firefighters. Smith debunked the myth that communications were lost due to the loss of the communications repeating tower when the first tower fell.The communications were lost because Giuliani's political cronies and lackeys who were appointed to run the department were criminally negligent and did not buy the department the new radios that had been badly needed and that had been promised to the rank and file. And that would have had the capability to broadcast with ease from the base of the towers to the roof of the towers.Is is logical to conclude that had the first tower of fallen and the new radios been delivered as promised the firefighters in the second towers would have been warned to get out. And would be alive and breathing today. Some estimate that as many as 150 plus firefighters could have been spared.

What a stellar book. Despite being written long before I ever worked in a fire department, the book still applies today. I'm not fond of fire books that are filled with bravado and self adulation; the shelves are littered with those. This is far from that. It's as much a social commentary on poverty, crime, arson, despair, and the people who sacrifice their lives in poverty stricken communities. Whether you work in law enforcement, EMS, or the fire service, there's a message here about what it means to work in public safety.There's parts of the book that will leave you in tears. It's an honest and introspective book.If you work in an urban area, as I do, there's parts of the job that tear away at your humanity and patience. There's things that haunt you in the dark corners of the mind. Scenes you wish you could unsee. It can be depressing. It can wear at the soul. It can make coming into work a dreaded chore. I found Dennis Smith's book to be cathartic in a way -- reading someone, four decades earlier, struggle with many of the same things that we struggle with today.

Report from Engine Co. 82 is an up close look at the working life of a South Bronx Firefighter in the 1970's. The author wrote this in 1972 when he had been a Firefighter for 8 years. There was an unprecedented amount of activity at this time in the South Bronx and the author does a great job of describing fireground activity before a Mask policy and constant running around to false alarms, rubbish fires, auto accidents , assaults and overdoses and the resultant death and injury. Dennis Smith was a cerebral warrior who read Steinbeck and Mailer to relax, quoted poetry and played the Bagpipes. As he describes the conditions of the area he works in he compares it to his own upbringing on the East side of Manhattan and his home 60 miles away upstate. His caring and those of his fellow Firefighters is evidenced in his sympathetic and questioning description of emergency conditions they respond to. This book was responsible for inspiring many future Firefighters and bringing to light the dangerous job they do. Over 40 years after this book was written the authors stories still ring true and are prime examples of a disciplined , dedicated and effective workforce in NYC. Recommended.

Story written by Dennis Smith who is a Fire fighter for Engine co. 82 in the South Bronx where it is the lower income area in the 1970's. Its one of the busiest areas if not the busiest for the amount of calls in country. This is a time where they have the fire pull boxes on the street or street corner which means they have a tremendous amount false calls with someone just walking or kids pull the handle just for the kicks. It is amazing going through the book that the people that live in these areas that the fire fighters laid down their lifes to protect use the fire fighters for sport by throwing rocks, shooting at and other means of harm. The story is a pretty good description of fire fighter life that being said there are some areas I wish there would have been a better description in certain areas for someone not in that profession.

I'm the nozzle man on a busy Engine company here in Connecticut. The senior guy of over 25 years recommended this book to me because he knew that I was an avid reader. I listened to him and picked it up on my Kindle, and once I did there were many late nights that followed of me laying in my bed at the firehouse reading this.It's a very honest, phenomenal portrayal of life in the FDNY and as a firefighter in general during some of the busiest years at the busiest Engine company. This book nails what it's like not only in the middle of a house fire, but also what it's like to live with a bunch of other guys in the firehouse. The jokes and pranks, the sad times and the happy times. It's all here and I would recommend this not only to anybody that's ever ridden backwards but also anyone that's ever been curious about what life as a fireman is really like.Pick this book up and you won't be able to put it down!
