A lot of information packed into a small book. Lots of photos I have never seen before and I have a lot of books. In reality these Soviet Sailors were elite well armed Special Operations Forces and the German Gebirgsjager were not typical Infantry. They were more similar to today's U.S. Army Rangers than 10th Mountain. They were very well trained and resourceful. The Soviet Naval Infantry were thrown together but over time evolved into a well trained force capable of taking on some very difficult operations. Most members being hardcore communists with some exceptions. Both had their ups and downs. These battles took place in the far Russian north and Finland mostly and this topic has been very overlooked through the years. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is interested in World War Two Eastern Front theatre of war.

The Eastern Front included a confrontation between German and Soviet forces above the Arctic Circle, in an area located between Kirkenes in northern Norway and Murmansk in the Soviet Union. The remote location, rugged terrain and harsh climate limited the fighting to specialized units. The Germans used their Mountain Divisions. The Soviets converted sailors into naval infantry and naval rifle units that could be delivered by a variety of small vessels into vulnerable locations on the Arctic coast. The story of their confrontation is told in this Osprey Combat Series book, authored by David Greentree, with illustrations by Johnny Shumate."Arctic Circle 1942-44: Gebirgsjager versus Soviet Sailor" introduces the opposing sides and their equipment, training, tactics, and command and control. The heart of the narrative are three separate combats, one in 1942 and two in 1944. The author dissects these combats in tactical detail, supported by maps, battle diagrams, illustrations, and period photographs. The three combats give a decent flavor of what war was like above the Arctic Circle. Conditions of weather and terrain affected both sides. The author relies heavily on what appear to be translations of battle reports, especially by the Soviet side, some of which make for clunky chunks of reading. Of note, some of this fighting took place in a slice of Finland that was absorbed by the Soviet Union after the war. On the whole, this is a interesting account, and recommended to students of the Second World War as an good introduction to a neglected theater of that war.

It is a good summary of a forgotten theater of war. No one really cares about what happened in the Arctic. I thought it was a good book.

Good military history book

Good book, but on a relatively insignificant part of WW II. If the Germans could have seized Murmansk, or cut the Murmansk - Leningrad railroad and kept it closed for a significant period of time, or seized Arkhangelsk, then the campaign in the North would have been strategically significant to the war on the Eastern Front. None of those things happened. The war in the North developed into the Soviets making relatively minor attacks and the Germans defending against them. In the end, the Soviets succeeded In taking the minor Norwegian port of Kirkenes. After that, there were no more reasons for the Soviets to attack in the far north. The book offers very detailed accounts of the attacks and defensive responses. There are also good discussions of the organizations and equipments of both the Soviet and German mountain or naval divisions and brigades. The reason I gave the book 3 Stars is because the entire campaign simply wasn't important to the overall war. If ever there was a place where no one should attempt to fight a war and in which decisive combat results are probably impossible, a partially mountainous, barren, snowy area north of the Arctic Circle is it.
