About the Author
Rick Barton currently teaches at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, where he serves as the co-director of Princeton’s Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiatives and Ullman Fellowships. He has served as an American ambassador to the United Nations and the Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees at the U.N., and was the first Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations under President Obama. He has led conflict management initiatives in crisis zones across the globe, in countries as diverse as Haiti, Iraq, Nigeria, and Turkey. Barton has published in The New York Times,The Washington Post, Politico, The Boston Globe, and numerous other international outlets. He has been a frequent guest on news shows ranging from NPR to The O’Reilly Factor.

Ambassador Barton's resume is a mile long, and this book reflects his wealth of experience and expertise. Written as a series of case studies, this book shows how the United States has applied or failed to apply essential foreign policy lessons throughout the past few decades. The overarching thesis—that the U.S. should focus its approach on people (specifically the people affected by conflict, who have the best knowledge of local circumstances and best practices), and that it should invest in "catalytic"(low-cost, high-risk, high-reward) initiatives—seems so reasonable, almost obvious, by the book's end that it is all the more disappointing that those lessons have so frequently been misapplied. Great read for anyone interested in U.S. foreign policy!

Heartfelt and cogent analysis by former U.S. Ambassador Rick Barton on the lessons and inspiration in the work of conflict resolution and international diplomacy. We tend to think of diplomacy and the workings of government in general as something done by people in suits and ties in obscure offices and places far removed from our lives. With the current federal administration, we see the end result of what happens when that perception is accepted as the status quo - disengagement, cynicism, polarization of society, and our collective failure to connect as human beings with an attitude of universal responsibility for the welfare of everyone on the planet. Civic engagement is vital to the collective survival of all of us, and all living beings. I feel hopeful reading this book, and more informed so as to better participate as a citizen activist.
This is a terrific book by a veteran diplomatic firefighter with experience in Bosnia, Rwanda, Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. A must-read for anyone who wants to know what roles the US can and should play in conflicted societies and what roles it should avoid.
