"When the Eagle Hunts" is the third novel in the "Cato and Macro" series of novels, which are set in the period of the Roman conquest of Britain. In this novel, the reader becomes more acquainted with the Britons who act as both adversary and, in some cases, ally to the Romans. In this story the family of a Roman General has been abducted by the Druids, the high priests of the Britons and implacable enemies of Rome. The protagonists, Cato and Macro, team up with a pair of Britons who are allies of Rome, in order to try to find and if possible rescue the general's family. This all makes for a very readable and enjoyable story. Young Cato continues to mature and come of age, while the grizzled experienced Centurion Macro acts as mentor and shows us how things would be perceived through the eyes of a seasoned Roman Centurion. This is a very engrossing and enjoyable novel. RJB.
Till now, the only Scarrow I'd read was his multi-volume masterpiece on Napoleon and Wellington, which was very well done. This book, I'm afraid, was barely interesting. Of course, the setting at the time when Rome was consolidating its conquest of Britain, made this part of British history come alive for me. But the story itself was sadly one-dimensional in most aspects. The characters were cardboard. The plot had few twists and turns and little suspense. Dialogue was elementary -- and I agree with other reviewers that the use of modern British expressions coming out of the mouths of Roman soldiers was a little disorienting. I'll give it three-stars for the history portrayed.
Truly a fun book. But it is sadly marred by enough typos to flunk an undergrad. Historical accuracy and perception, strong characters and good writing carried me through it. I'll read more in the series, but I hope an editor is found.
The Kindle version of this is awful!!!! The first 25% of the books the text ranges in all types of sizes from very small font too huge font all on the same page. I tried to see if there was a way to fix this and tried to resize the type, did not work. I then downloaded thinking maybe it was the copy in the cloud, did not work. So I am going to return it and then order a hard copy.Very, very disappointed in this and lack of a way to ask Amazon for help.
Simon Scarrow is great at what he does and that's all that can be said. If you’re going to read this then make sure you get the full picture and story by starting with the first book of the series. Is a long series but he never duplicates plots even though he uses the same characters and basically same place and time. Well worth a read.
I found this to be an excellent history lesson of the Roman Invasion of England. I can't imagine being a legionaire for 25 years. If they were injured the probability of massive infection was enormous. I liked reading this book. I learned a lot about life way back when.
All of mr. Scarrow's books are FASCINATING!!! Factually correct historically accurate, filled with fabulous tales of the Roman Empire and it's comquests, the tales are told from the point of view of their 2 protagonists Macro & Cato, giving it all a human touch one can relate to. I have loved each book and plan to read everything this author has written!
A good read, with Macro and Cato continuing to get into and out of scrapes. The first in the series was a very good read and spurred me to continue. This was the second I read, even though out of sequence (The Eagle's Conquest is the second of the series). I am a bit disappointed in this one because of the profuse amount of British slang, e.g.,"Oi! Careful, you hopeless wankers. I've got your number." I may read more of the series but I'm not as enthusiastic as after the first.
