Quite good for the dedicated fan of Dr. Johnson, as well as for those with a keen interest in the making of dictionaries and how the English language evolved through the 18th century. Problems with "fixing" definitions of words; guarding against foreign intrusions; standardizing spellings; etc., are all covered.Professor Mugglestone ( a great name for an English academic) writes with a strong command of her subject and her thoughts are often quite interesting. But as always with books about Samuel Johnson, quotes by the great man carry the day.I did find that the insertion of many citations directly in the text interrupted an otherwise smooth reading experience. And, the placement of a standard authorship statement at the bottom of the first page of each chapter was a minor irritant.
