I am using this book to supplement learning to prepare for my alternative teaching cerficate. This 350+ page large page sized book bases its recommendations and its many ideas on research. All research is cited. This is serious, useful information. This is not a book of someone talking off the top of their head with random ideas and information. In addition to the paragraphs of text there are checklists, surveys, questionairres, and action plans which can be copied out of the book for your use. Example: page 234: High School Examples for a One-Year Action Plan to Reach Results for MATH, Survey page 342-346 for Measure of School, Family, and Community Partnerships. The book uses a framework of six types of involvement for comprehensive programs of partnership: parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making and collaborating with community. This is used throughout the book to organize the suggestions for each topic. This book is for K-12. This book explains HOW schools can use family and the community to work collaboratively to provide a quality education for students. For me this is not a read cover to cover book as it is such a wide topic that it doesn't apply to my plan to teach high school. I can dip into the relevant chapters which pertain to my limited area of responsibility. Rating 5 stars = Love It.
As someone who is married to an ex community school coordinator this book is invaluable and would have been a lifesaver if it had been around when she was on the job. It goes step by step for programming, relationship building, policy suggestions and thoughtful recommendations on how to build your core team. The accompanying CD is filled with lots of useful information and the workbook examples throughout are thought provoking and could be used as is in some schools. This is a great resource for anyone looking to harness the power of schools, communities and partnerships into transforming education into what it should be.
"School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Your Handbook for Action" by Joyce L. Epstein, Mavis G. Sanders, et al is a complete and useful handbook. The topics are laid out carefully and (best of all) in print that is easy to read (no eye strain). This is a handbook meant to be used with suggestions and action items that make sense and are tangibly useful. The authors/contributors did a good job of making it easy to follow and look up information. I also like that it includes community because community is an important equation in education. It is well done and well worth the read.
As a grandparent and an active volunteer in a wide variety of community organizations, including our local elementary school, living in a high-poverty area with few resources, I need all the help I can get. To have access to the research, experience, and knowledge of the authors of this book is an unquantifiable gift. Let's just say that it is awesome! The information is well-organized and easy to access. The ideas are stimulating. I highly recommend this book if you want to help creat better partnerships among your families, school, and community!
First, I disliked this book but in part, it may be due to the default bias presented by the authors who seem to assume this will be used in a poverty stricken neighborhood. The suggestions seem more like bribery in many instances and simply do not represent the needs of urban and rural families - especially those without poverty problems but rather time constraints. Assuming your school fits this niche then the book may apply...also assuming you have additional discretionary funds to implement many of the suggestions. Overall not impressed.
This is an excellent handbook that covers steps to strengthen family and community engagement to promote equity and increase student success! It's very well written and gives us numerous ideas to execute going forward.
My perspective: I'm a grandparent with 7 mostly school age grandkids, living in a troubled school district (including a recent forced resignation of a superintendent). To say that community/school/family partnerships are in order is an understatement. Oh yeah . . . the book review . . . . It's right on, moving logically from the unknown (how does one start?) to the known - in detail. CD included. Workshop worksheets included. Hands on with loads of specific suggestions. Presented in plain English with little fluff. This is the 4th edition so this resource has been around a while and for good reason (which becomes apparent as one works into this). There's not much motivational stuff here, but if you already possess that, then this text will help you start a partnership and go as far as you wish to go with it.
This is an amazing book, and I wish I'd had it 15 years ago. I'm currently using it as a resource for a graduate class, and this covers so many issues with the current expected collaborative focus on education, but transcends for use into so many other community/governmental areas as well. There are explicit resources for homework, assessments, projects, strategies for collaboration, etc., but all of these are easily modified for your own tailor-made focus and needs. This book is a comprehensive resource, strategic plan, and set of materials all in one.
