Very interesting. The book is well made, tight binding, durable cover, acid free paper. Some people have complained about the quality of the text. It looks like a copy of a copy. I see this a lot in Dover books. It is a photo reproduction of an out-of-copyright text that was probably originally printed with a letterpress, instead of a modern offset press. The font is very small, and a little wobbly, but it is legible.Pages alternate with illustrations and descriptions of those illustrations on facing pages. Between seven and nine devices in each section.Great resource for ideas. I can understand why it's still in print.
I saw some good reviews on the Kindle edition, but I have just the paperback edition. And it does not meet my needs. The reviews I read on the Kindle edition says it has a cross-reference. The paperback edition does not.Drawings and very short descriptions, that's all you'll find in this book. No instructions on building any of the movements, no measurements, although a few of the pulley type drawings I saw did have ratios in the description.I wanted something to help me build simple toys out of wood and cardboard, plastic and string. I wanted to be able to search for ideas like using a motor to make levers wave in different directions, but this book does not have a way of searching the drawings. It doesn't have exploded views to help you make your own. It only has drawings and short descriptions. It did not suit my needs.
My father's 1930-something printing of this book was part of his collection and now resides with my younger son. My grandson was so interested in the 'cool old book' that I bought him this to be his very own. At 17, he is fascinated in the basics... that have not changed with technology! This is a great book that will endure. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in how things work! Very helpful book.
I had no clue how devices worked so this book was a revelation. Everything is easy when someone explains the details to you.
A very old gem, republished, this book is a compendium of mechanical linkages from the age of steam. While computers, sensors, hydraulics, and stepping motors have largely replaced them in industry, it's surprising how many still exist in the machines around us. Plus, they are intrinsically interesting! The descriptions can be VERY brief, and the illustrations are just that - line drawings. At times I find myself having to work through a mechanism to understand it, a typical issue being that the fixed points of the linkage aren't always described. But all in all, it's a just a fun, inexpensive book. A few bucks on Kindle. What could be better?
Great reference book, displays more movements and levers than I ever imaginated, a good buy
I purchased 507 Mechanical Movements: Mechanisms and Devices by Henry T. Brown, to have a source of information and examples of the Mechanical Engineering device concepts to reference while using other texts and studying Mechanical Engineering in review. I know the five hundred mechanisms and devices are in drawings and illustrations, rather than digital or CAD drawings, but you can spend a lot of money purchasing CAD drawn examples of this type. Each of the mechanisms is illustrated with drawings and descriptions of how it is used. This digital edition includes an handy index to the contents also.
I got this book to serve as inspiration for an Art Nevoux project I'm working on. I've fallen in love with all the movements and mechanisms pictured within. I'm not in the demographic who actually uses this sort of thing, but, if you're looking for a small something for a mechanic or miller/machinist this is a neat little gift and just a generally cool book to have laying around. The book features individual movements to accomplish tasks within a machine. From watch escapements to self closing weir gates for streams. Also a great assortment of mechanical doo-dads and whatsits from universal joints for your steam work factory to those little lever things villeins tie damsels to shortly before getting beaten up by the hero....or you could just look at the pictures (all 507 of them!)You should buy this book 1. Because it's a classic. 2. It's can give others false impressions about how smart you are. 3. It's too cheap not too.
